Eminem is a well-known rapper around the world, but a lot of people don’t actually
know how his infamous name came to be. His actual name is Marshall Bruce Mathers, and
he was raised in Detroit Michigan, a place that would become crucial to the man he is
today
As a child, Marshall struggled to bond with other children and was often alone and
isolated. He was a very shy child and tended to creep others out with his awkward silence
and weird stance. Spending most of his time alone, Marshall found activities to help ease
his mind. He enjoyed jump rope, hopscotch, collecting rocks, and yet still nothing seemed
to fill the void he had in his heart. It didn’t help that his parents weren’t around much, and
he spent many nights in their house alone. They tried their best to be supporting and loving,
but with two grueling jobs it was hard to find time to spend with him.
One afternoon, he stumbled to the gas station to get a snack. His go to snack was a bag of
sunflower seeds and this was a part of his daily routine as a kid. As he sat outside eating
his seeds, a young kid came over to him. He introduced himself as John, and offered
Marshall an M&M. No one had ever been this kind to Marshall, and he finally felt like he was
normal. The two went on to become bestfriends and in their teenage years they would
often have rap battles in their free time. Noticing Marshalls talent, John sent a recording of
a rap Marshall had created to a talent agency and as we know, they loved it. From then on,
Marshall introduced himself as Eminem. A homage to John, the first friend he ever had and
the candy that made him feel like he was worthy of this life.
